Teal blue and white (silver) are the colors formerly used for the Aviation battalions. The white star symbolizes guidance and is also used as an identification marking on aircraft. The reversed pile terminating in a star alludes to reconnaissance from the sky and the blue tip of the pile simulates an aircraft in flight.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 503d Aviation Battalion on 16 January 1964. It was rescinded on 8 July 1976. The insignia was reinstated for the 503d Aviation Battalion and amended to revise the symbolism effective 21 May 1978.
